Restaurant chains have never been my favourite choice, however every now and again you come across something a little bit different. I was a little unsure when visiting Giraffe, firstly because of its location (renown for restaurant chains and after work drinking establishments) and secondly down to the fact that I think Giraffe is more of a family friendly eatery. My friend and I arrived at 6.30ish on a Thursday evening and were both pleasantly surprised by how busy it was. The restaurant, which had only opened two weeks ago had a bustling atmosphere with a mixture of people dining and enjoying a cocktail at the bar.
Once we were seated by the window I was able to absorb the rather quirky surroundings. A blend of modern design and artistic wall art added a flamboyant edge perfect for its stylish Greek Street location. The menu was extensive but very confusing, it was a little difficult to distinguish each course and choose a dish. We finally settled on the nachos to start; a rather enournmous sharing dish topped with veggie chilli mix, melted jack cheese, guacamole, sour cream, ranchera salsa & jalapenos. Priced pretty reasonable at just £6.95 it was a great start to the meal. I did however regret the rather large portion after I delved into the following two courses!
The started was followed by Roasted Duck Leg in Cabernet Sauce (£11.95) and Mexican Jalapeno Pesto Chicken (£10.95). The duck was perfectly cooked with a generous portion or creamy mashed potato, my guest didn’t leave a smidgen on the plate! The pesto chicken had depth and lots of flavour, which is often difficult to achieve with chicken breast, it was however a little oily which made it difficult to pick up.
Although, there was no room for dessert we couldn’t resist the Toffee Apple Crumble (£5.95) and Burnt Cream with Berry Compote (£4.95), both as delicious as they sound. The crumble was a huge portion and to be honest it is enough for two to share. We washed down the meal with a bottle of pinot grigio zibibbo (£25.50), fresh, fruity and a lovely hint of apple.
Overall, we had a fantastic meal in great surroundings and we were well looked after by the very helpful staff. They also have a great cocktail list and a fantastic eye for design so it is something definitely worth a visit. Although it is a chain, it didn’t fulfill those ‘chain’ expectations. I would recommend Giraffe for a visit and if you can’t fit in an evening meal the breakfast and brunch menu looked fab! With the ‘discount’ nation we have become I do find it hard to want to pay full price for this type of menu so I would maybe opt for one of their deals outlined below, in particular ‘Burger Tuesday’! For those of you who like a large portion, this is THE place for you!
