Remember, remember the fifth of November. Bonfire night is upon us and it’s time to celebrate in style. Leeds is holding a number of events, so no matter where you are across the city you will be able to warm yourself near the bonfire, chomp down on some toffee apples and gaze in awe at the beautiful firework displays that will be lighting up the skyline.

Local parks that will be hosting a bonfire night celebration include; Bramley, East End, Middleton, Springhead and Woodhouse Moor. The fires will be lit at 7 pm on Monday, with the firework display starting at 7.30 pm.

However, there is no doubt where the action will be this Bonfire night. The celebrations in Roundhay Park have been a favourite for years and this year it is set to attract around 70,000 spectators. The bonfire at Roundhay is an event well worth marking on your calendars. The bonfire will be lit at 7.30 pm with the fireworks shooting into the sky from 8 pm. Admission is absolutely free, so wrap up warm and make a night of it.

Whether you’re heading out to an organised event for your Bonfire celebrations or holding your very own firework display, please remember to stay safe. Further information on bonfire night safety is available at www.bonfire-night-safety.co.uk

Leeds Uncut was lucky enough to grab a ticket to Party in the Park last Sunday kindly provided by Persil. In the beaming sunshine amongst thousands of screaming kids I made my way to the Persil Mosh ‘n’ Wash stand to see what all the fuss was about! With kids fighting to get a piece of the action, the stand provided an array of fun games including face painting, a dressing up box, a ‘muddy-wood’ wall of fame and a ‘mucky dip’ full of prizes.

There was also a chance for children to enter into a competition to win a festival in their very ow back garden…if only I was young again!

If you were there this weekend, send us your pics!

It seems these days young people get a hard time for not being motivated enough for our current environment but there is more than enough talent out there to enter a competition just like, The Peace Mix Relay. It’s a chance to give local, young talent the chance to record and perform.

Peace Mix is a national campaign that aims to spread a message of peace and unity to young people through music and therefore the song that will be recorded will be a peace-themed song. Any successful talent will win a place at the national finale as well as visit a free music industry workshop at Future Arts, in Leeds on the 27th July.

Laura Hemsley, Managing Director of Future Arts, explained: “Peace Mix aims to spread a message of unity to young people through music. Here at Future Arts we are really excited to be part of this national project and help to bring this message to young people here in our region and showcase some local talent.”

Young people from across the region are invited to submit their ‘peace-themed’ lyrics, rhymes, melodies and spoken word online at peacemix.co.uk. The best entries will be invited to join the VIP headliners at the Peace Mix Presents finale, held at London’s Roundhouse on 28th August 2012.

Linda Quinn from BIG commented: “We want to reach out to young people across Yorkshire and Humberside and give them a chance to promote peace and understanding and make a positive difference in their community. This is a great opportunity for local musicians, lyricists, MCs, songwriters and poets to come forward to showcase their talent and to be part of this national campaign.”

Peace Mix has come together with partners to offer young people the wide knowledge and resources they may need to achieve there full potential. Partners include an education charity Blastbeat, youth engagement agency Livity as well as community groups, voluntary sectors and youth organisations.

Whether you’re a student, or in full time work or unemployed this could be for you. This could be your chance to get your name recognised by some intrinsic people in the business. What’s the harm in entering? Plus here at Leeds Uncut we want to see the talent of Leeds come out and be known!

To enter please visit www.peacemix.co.uk.

It’s that time again, the weekend! While July tends to be a quiet month, do not fear, we have found events in Leeds to keep you entertained.
Tomorrow sees the beginning of the outdoor music festival, Everything Under the Sun at The Light. Following the success of last year’s Gleeds production the cast are back with a new musical adaption taken from the Shakespeare’s play ‘Taming of the Shrew’.

The Everything Under Sun is about two very different sisters who have been left their late fathers £10 million lotto win. Katherine is a sharp tongued spinster while Bianca is a wannabe wag, looking for love with any hot shot footballer. To inherit the money they must comply to their fathers one condition. Katherine must marry before her wag hopeful sister, Bianca however the girls find themselves at Echo beach which is a new playing field for Bianca. Will the girls get their hands on the money?

Tickets cost £8 and 50% of the proceeds go to a great cause, Yorkshire Cancer Research. So why not treat yourself to some shopping and then relax to a lively musical with your new purchases. The festival is under cover outside so this is not a weather permitting event. Picnics are welcome and a bar service is provided.

Performance times;
Friday 13th July – 7pm,
Saturday 14th – 2pm/7pm
Sunday 15th – 2pm/7pm
Visit The Light website for more information. Tickets can be purchased at leedstickets.com or from the Customer Suite.

Why not take part in the Jane Tomlinson Leeds Half Marathon and help support the work of Marie Curie Nurses? On Sunday 13th May set off from the iconic Millennium Square and take in the sites of this bustling city Leeds has to offer. In preparation for those wanting to get in shape for summer and in doing so raise money for Marie Curie Cancer here’s some basic information you need to get organised.

I’m sure you all know or have some experience from your friends and family or loved ones of how cancer can affect lives. Not only is it a fun way to get fit it will give you a real sense of achievement, not everybody can say they’ve ran a half marathon! It can set you apart from others and could give you that edge on your CV that you didn’t have before. It’s a perfect opportunity to rally your friends together to have a fun, fulfilled day.

This 13-mile charity run offers a great challenge and is suited to first-time and experienced runners alike. With the marathon starting at 8:30am and finishing at 7:30pm you will have 11 hours to complete the marathon, there’s no pressure to be the best and get the fastest time. It’s about getting across the finishing line and achieving the 13 miles in order to raise money for this great charity.

Marie Curie has 2,000 nurses in the UK and last year they worked for 1,200,000 hours caring for terminally ill patients, including half of all cancer patients who die at home. If the 13-mile marathon isn’t for you then here is a way to get involved and make a difference. The opportunities are endless; you can start with something small like a cake sale at your office or University or can be something a bit bigger like a student fashion show. Whatever fundraiser you choose to do it will help, any donations help these nurses care for those who really need it.

If you need help join the Daffodil Team online, they will give you support all the way with training tips, a fundraising pack and advice from your local fundraiser on how to reach your sponsorship goal.

The following parks Middleton Park, Springhead Park, Bramley Park and East End Park all light their bonfires at 7pm. In true English form, the weather is expected to rain and a low temperate of 7 degrees so wrap up and take a brolly.

Fancy a good ol’ fashioned, pre-Christmas booze up? Well you’re in luck, because on 10th November, from 7pm onwards, Leeds-based Wine and Liquor Merchant, Latitude, are inviting you to join them for an evening of fun and unique indulgence.

Latitude houses one of the largest ranges of specialist spirits and liquors in the North, with around 700 products in stock and is a huge supplier to some of the best bars and restaurants in Leeds.

To celebrate this, The Piazza by Anthony will be playing host to a night of true decadence, where Latitude will be giving you the chance to sample from their wide portfolio of fine wines, spirits and aged liquors.

They will be offering tipples from a huge selection of notable brands, such as Pol Roger, Yealands, Appleton Estate, Mumm, Auchentoshan, El Jimador and many more.

Latitude provide the booze and the buffet – all you have to do is make sure you don’t end up as designated driver.

This event is perfect for entertaining work colleagues or wooing prospective clients. It’ll be a great opportunity to choose the drinks for your own festive bash, pick out Christmas gifts for your friends and family or maybe even a cheeky little gift for yourself!

Tickets are £15 per person and can be purchased from the website. Alternatively you can email chris@latitudewine.co.uk or call 0113 245 3393, for more information.
